The Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) has created the Madam C.J. Walker Scholarship with funding from Mary Kay Inc. to support minority students in the cosmetic sciences field. The scholarship will aid those pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree as part of the SCC’s initiative to encourage diversity, equity, and inclusion in cosmetics and personal care. A pioneer of direct sales, Madam Walker (born Sarah Breedlove, 1867-1919) is regarded as the first female self-made millionaire in America. Born to former slaves, Walker transformed herself through entrepreneurship, developing a line of cosmetics and hair-care products for black women.
