Consumer spend online continues to rise, according to an Internet Retailer analysis of industry data and U.S. Commerce Department figures. Consumers spent $517.36 billion with U.S. merchants in 2018, an increase of 15.0 percent versus prior year at $449.88 billion. E-commerce represented an increased slice of the retail market in 2018 with a 14.3 percent share, up from 12.9 percent in 2017 and 11.6 percent in 2016. This represented more than half, or 51.9 percent, of all retail sales growth, the largest share since 2008. Amazon continues to dominate the U.S. retail market, with total value of transactions from American consumers reaching $206.82 billion last year, a jump of 16.3 percent from 2017, accounting for 40 percent of U.S. online retail.
