President Donald Trump signed into law a farm bill that removes industrial hemp from the Controlled Substance Act, making it legal to produce.
The production of industrial hemp was already legal, however farmers had to apply for a local research program run by a state, university or Native American tribe—a long and arduous process. The bill makes CBD, a medicinal compound derived from industrial hemp, legal in all 50 states. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) currently considers CBD an illegal additive to foods and supplements.
